From OutPost Press: Gerald/ine, a moving true story
This important book was out of print for many years. It was reprinted by OutPost Press in close co-operation with Monica Jay, the author, and can be ordered directly from the publisher. Information about ordering below.
Gerald/ine is an autobiographical story about a British landlady falling in love with one of her lodgers, later to find he is a transvestite. Not only is this a warm and moving love story, but also a very honest and brave account of the difficult road to greater understanding. Monica Jay only knew the word transvestite when meeting Gerald/Geraldine. After the two years together, and the end of the relationship, she eventually became an active counsellor with the Beaumont Society in UK, a support organisation for transvestites and their families.
There are few books like this, written from the perspective of the partner. The conflicts and problems in their relationship are not swept under the rug, her agony and confusion are almost unbearable at times, still the transvestism is not considered the villain but an exiting challenge. Monica falls in love with the rather masculine Gerald, but become mesmerized by the exiting, feminine Geraldine, and she realizes she really wants both.
The book was first published thirteen years ago, but it is a timeless story, repeated somewhere on this earth every day. For the many transvestites and their partners struggling to make their relationships work, Monica Jay's personal account offers many angles for insight and discussion. You can read an excerpt from the book here.
Gerald/ine was made into a major film in 1992, with Julie Walters and Adrian Pasdar starring, under the title "Just Like a Woman". In our opinion that is still the best film about transvestism. "Tootsie" and "Mrs Doubtfire" in all respect, but they were never about the real thing. Unfortunately Rank who produced "Just Like a Woman" never put a serious effort into marketing it. In the US it was never on general release, but instead sent out as a video cassette in August '95.
The film is a lot different from the book. The subplot, where Gerald has a "shoot-out" with his company at the end, was written into the film. Those who wonder how it really ended should read the book. Our reprint was also carefully revised by Monica Jay, and reverted closer to the original manuscript. As one example, the hotel where the TVs meet in London is now correctly named as The Philbeach, throughout the book.
To order the released reprint of Gerald/ine by Monica Jay (ISBN 82-91672-00-8), the easiest way is through the publisher directly. We also welcome inquieries from serious bookstores and book distributors about reseller's discounts.
